Maritime Lecture Series, Witness to History: The Lee A. Tregurtha

The Lee A. Tregurtha is a familiar sight in Sandusky Bay, but her story stretches back to World War II. Launched in 1942 and converted into the Navy oiler USS Chiwawa, she fueled Allied ships across the Atlantic and Pacific. After the war, she returned to the Great Lakes, later renamed in honor of the wife of Interlake Steamship Company’s vice chairman.

Still active today, this 826-foot freighter carries cargo across the lakes while preserving more than 80 years of history. Join us for a fascinating look at one of the Great Lakes’ most storied ships.
